A favor, and it's a real one

Nominate
Todd Walton

There's a handful of awards this year for people building where Black culture, technology and community meet, and every one of them runs on nominations from folks who've actually seen the work up close, which is where you come in.

How this works

  1. You answer four short questions in your own words.
  2. If you get stuck on one, tap Need a reminder of what Todd's been doing? underneath it and you'll get some facts you're welcome to borrow.
  3. You give permission at the bottom, and then Todd's team submits your nomination under your name using what you wrote.
  4. You only do this once and it covers every award on the list, including the ones that haven't opened yet.

Who you are

These awards all want a real nominator they can reach, so your details go to the award organizations and nowhere else.

You'll get a copy of exactly what goes in under your name.

One of the awards won't take a nomination without it.

Where you work or your own business, and "self-employed" works fine.

Optional, though it does strengthen things.

Your words

Write it the way you'd say it out loud, because one specific thing you watched him do lands harder than a polished paragraph and the people reading these can tell the difference immediately.

One of these awards is specifically about folks creating hope and healing in Black communities, so if you've seen that in him, whether in the work or just as a person, this is the place. Keep it to about 100 words.

Need a reminder of what Todd's been doing?
  • He's been an advocate for mental health awareness for more than twenty years, and it started at home. His brother lived with mental health issues, and that's what pulled Todd into the work and kept him in it.
  • Ten years on the board of Donda's House / Art of Culture, the Chicago youth arts organization, where he's Communications Chair and where art is how a lot of young people work through what they're carrying. More than a thousand young people have come through those programs.
  • Eighteen years publishing The Hip Hop Democrat, so people have somewhere to talk honestly about the things that weigh on them.
  • He teaches and mentors constantly, and a lot of that is really just being a steady adult for somebody who doesn't have one.
  • More recently he's been building toward residential care for adults living with developmental disabilities and mental health conditions, and advocating for a young Black man failed by the systems that were supposed to catch him. Both are still in progress.
  • His faith isn't decoration, it's why he's still there with people long after it stopped being convenient.

Honestly the strongest answer here is personal, so if he's checked on you or sat with somebody through a hard season or made a room feel safe, that's worth more than any credential on this list.
